On–Site Educational Activities

This special Civil War-themed interactive program is designed for 8th grade students but inquiries for other age groups are encouraged. This program is offered every Wednesday in the months of March and October starting in March 2012, the 150th anniversary of the Battle of New Bern. Each program day has a morning and afternoon timeslot available. The program is capable of accommodating up to 60 total (including students, teachers, chaperones) participants per time slot. Registration is required two weeks in advance. Admission is $3 per student and $6 per adult. Please inquire about our complimentary ticket policies for teachers and chaperones when making reservations. The following activities will be included as part of the program though inclement weather may cause slight variations. The time allotted for the complete program is 1 3/4 hours.

  1. Interactive Tour of the New Bern Academy Museum – During their visit to this former Civil War hospital, students will become Civil War historians by examining artifacts, handling reproduction items, and a special activity where students give a voice to the past. (30 minutes)
  2. Attention – Company! – Students demonstrate their loyalty to President Lincoln and the Union by signing a loyalty oath before experiencing military life by making cartridges and participating in drill. (20 minutes)
  3. Camp Life – Students will learn about soldiers' leisure time and how they dealt with the hardships of war through some of the popular amusements during this time. (20 minutes)
  4. Encounter with the Past – Students will meet a notable figure from New Bern's Civil War past who will share their story and the stories of others who lived through occupation. (20 minutes)
