The Advance

The Advance was the first and most famous of the blockade runners owned and operated by the state of North Carolina during the Civil War. Formerly a passenger vessel, the ship was converted into a supply runner in 1863. The Advance ran the Union blockade off the coast of Wilmington quite successfully, until captured by Union blockade forces in September 1864. Afterwards, the ship served as a blockader itself, in turn intercepting Confederate blockade-runners.
